Denmark participating in the European military of the EU

Tomorrow Denmark is voting regarding its participation in the military and security of the European Union. As a Danish citizen I’m just visiting now and I can’t vote as I don’t live in Denmark. I am surprised by the idea that Denmark doesn’t need to cooperate with the other European countries on defense which some politicians seem to advocate. The UK left the EU voting for Brexit and has their own powerful defense, but Denmark is hardly the UK. Not even close. Some politicians recommending a no vote seem to think NATO is enough and will always work. They are especially counting on the United States.

The only thing I seem to hear when I have met Americans, and had the chance to talk about the subject, seems to have been complaints about them paying for European security and often ridiculing the militaries of small European countries. Their former president didn’t seem to be a big supporter of NATO. He also tried to arrogantly snatch Greenland in a quick real estate transaction as he characterized it himself. I just don’t think it is realistic to expect NATO led by the United States to always guarantee Denmark’s security. I think it’s naïve.

Normally I am not a big fan of the centralization and bureaucracy of the European Union in other areas, but with defense and security I think it is different. I just think, with potentially some large powerful aggressors out there, Denmark will be able to count more on the other Scandinavian countries, Germany, Poaland, Holland and other European countries in an emergency. And the United States has other parts of the world to worry about, like Asia and the Middle East where they will probably need more resources.

In my writing going forward, I plan to sometimes write about some political subjects that I am interested in. I am sort of a liberal libertarian, if that makes sense. I find the social conservatism rising in North America and around the world nasty and scary and at the same time I don’t like all the increasing regulation of small business and bureaucracy around the world leading often to corruption.
